Stick drift on stream: why your overlay twitches and which deadzone to set
Your controller feels fine in games, but the stick on your overlay keeps twitching. What stick drift is, why overlays show what games hide, and how to pick a deadzone that hides the wobble without eating real movement.

You let go of the controller, the game is perfectly still, and the stick on your overlay keeps twitching. Nothing is wrong with the overlay. It is showing exactly what the controller reports, and the controller is not reporting zero.
Games hide drift, overlays show it
An analog stick reports its position on two axes, each from -1 to 1. At rest it should report 0 on both, but no stick does exactly that. Sensors wear, springs loosen and dust gets in, so a stick settles slightly off-center and the reading wobbles by a few hundredths.
Games expect this and ignore everything near the center. That ignored area is the deadzone. Microsoft's recommended default for Xbox controllers is about a quarter of the stick's travel: 7849 out of 32767 for the left stick and 8689 for the right. A controller can be well worn before a game with a deadzone that size notices anything.
An overlay is there to show your hands, so small, deliberate movements matter. gamepad.lol overlays start with no stick deadzone at all, which is why drift you never feel in games shows up on stream.
Measure it first
Guessing wastes time. The stick drift test records each stick at rest for five seconds and reports the largest offset on either axis, plus a deadzone just above it. Put the controller on a table for the test; holding it adds tiny movements of your own.
A rough guide to the numbers:
- Under 5%: normal. A small deadzone removes the flicker.
- 5 to 15%: common on well-used controllers. A deadzone still hides it cleanly.
- Over 15%: the stick rests well off-center. A deadzone hides it on stream, but games with small deadzones may start to feel it too.
Set the deadzone in your overlay
In the gamepad.lol editor, open the Input tab and set Stick deadzone to the value the test suggested. Save, and the overlay in OBS picks it up without a refresh. The same tab has a Trigger deadzone for triggers that do not fully return to zero.
One deadzone covers both sticks, so use the higher of the two suggestions.
What a deadzone costs
The deadzone works per axis: any axis closer to center than the threshold reads as zero, independently of the other one. Two side effects follow, and both grow with the value:
- A small jump at the threshold. When the stick crosses it, the overlay goes from center straight to the real position. At 5% nobody notices; at 25% a slow push starts with a visible hop.
- Straight lines near the center. Moving slowly and diagonally near the middle, one axis can clear the threshold before the other, so the stick briefly slides along a straight line.
That is why the right deadzone is the smallest one that stops the twitching, not the biggest one you can get away with.
Fixing the stick itself
A deadzone hides drift; it does not repair it. If the offset keeps growing, or games start moving on their own:
- Clean it. Compressed air around the base of the stick, with the stick pushed to each side, clears dust that often causes early drift.
- Recalibrate. Some controllers can be recalibrated in the manufacturer's app or in Steam's controller settings. That helps with a shifted center, not with worn sensors.
- Replace the module or claim the warranty. Worn sensors do not recover. Controllers with Hall effect or TMR sticks measure position with magnets instead of parts that rub against each other, and are far less prone to drift.
Run the test again every few months. Drift rarely appears overnight, and a number that creeps up tells you before your viewers do.
